Chapter 1 Prelude To Disaster...

"Tails, bedtime!" Sally called over to a two-tailed fox, who was playing a game of soccer with some other kids.
"Ah, gee Aunt Sally. Do I have to? It's only 9:00!" The little fox moaned.
"Yes, you do. Don't make me pull rank and royalty on you, mister. Bed, now."
"Okay, okay. I'm going. Sorry guys. You heard the Princess." Tails muttered to the other kids.
"Sure, Tails. See ya tomorrow then." A little rabbit named Cream called after him.

On the walk towards Tails's hut, Tails felt that, being thirteen now, he was now longer a child, and should be able to do what he wanted, without being told what to do by his elders. He voiced his case to Princess Sally Acorn for the third time that week.
"Aunt Sally, I'm thirteen years old now. Why can't I live like one, instead of everyone still treating me like a child?" Tails stopped and looked directly at Sally, definately.
"Tails, it's late, and I'm too tired to argue this. We've been through this before. Several times this week alone. You're too young. Not until you're sixteen. Understood?" Sally growled through clenched teeth.
"Sally, you and Sonic were my age and fighting Eggman, without anyone telling YOU what to and what not to do! IT'S NOT FAIR!!!" Tails cried, stamping his foot.
"THAT IS ENOUGH TAILS! I don't want to hear any more of this. Case closed!"
They arrived at Tails' hut, and Sally stopped in front of the door.
"IN. NOW. BED! NO ARGUMENTS!" Sally ordered in a no-nonsense manner.
"I'm going. I'm going..." Tails muttered and entered the hut.
He threw himself down on the bed. He sighed, and was soon alseep, dreaming. However, his rest was anything but restful. In his dream, he saw fire and destruction raining down on Robotropolis and Knothole. Death everywhere. He saw himself walking around in a daze, then stop in front of a dead creature. His dream self walked slowly over, and turned the figure face up. He gasped when he saw the face. HIS face...

The next morning, Tails awoke and found a note beside his bed. He sat up and read it. It was from Sally, asking him to report to her as soon as he woke up. He crumpled up the note and threw it in the trash. He took a quick shower and combed his fur, then headed for Acorn Castle. He tried to remember what the dream was about, but could not recall anything about it. He reached Acorn Castle and flashed his ID to the guard, who nodded and let him pass. He entered and headed for Sally's private chambers, where she would most likely be this early in the day. He stopped in front of the door, took a deep breath, and sighed. He knocked on the door one time.
"Enter!" A voice from inside called.

Tails coughed nervously, and opened the door. He peered in and saw Sally and Sonic sitting on the bed. Sally looked over at the door.
"Oh, good. Tails, we were just talking about you. Please come in and sit down. I have some news to tell you." Sally said.
Tails walked over and sat in the chair Sally had motioned to. He felt rather uneasy.
"Tails, Sonic and I were talking about what you said last night, and we have decided that you were right. It is unfair that we are still treating you like a child. So," Sally paused and sighed, and glanced at Sonic who nodded back. "Tails, I give you permission to do as you wish. You are thirteen. It is time you lived as you wanted... My guardianship over you offically ends as of right now."
Tails nearly fell over the chair from the news. He couldn't think of anything to say...

"But...but...Aunt Sally, I-I..." Tails stuttered.
"It's okay Tails. I was wrong to treat you like a baby still. So Sonic and I agreed to let you see what it was like to live as you wanted. Without our guidance. Fair enough?" Sally asked.
"Ummm...Okay." Tails replied, unsure if it was a trap...
"And as the first thing you can do with your new freedom, is lead an assault against Eggman's new robotizicer. You can take anyone you want, up to three people. Beyond that, you will probably risk detection. Okay, Tails?" Sonic added.
"Sure, Sonic! Leave it to me!" Tails grinned.
"Give us the list of people you've chosen by noon, okay, sweetie?" Sally interjected.
"Okay, Aunt Sally." Tails nodded and headed for the door.
"Oh, one more thing, Tails," Sally called after him.
Tails paused and looked back at her. "Yes, Aunt Sally?"
"No more 'Aunt Sally', just 'Princess Sally' or 'Your Highness' from now on when we're in public. 'Aunt Sally' will be fine in private."

*Tails smiled and left the room.*
Sonic: Do you think that was wise, Sal?
Sally: No, but it gets him off my back for a while. I guarantee, Sonic, after this mission, he'll be begging to go back to being stuck here.
Sonic: I hope you're right, Sal. I hope you're right...

*That night, at the mission debriefing.*
Sal: Okay, Tails, have you chosen the three people yet?
*Tails stood up and nodded.*
Tails: Yes, Your Highness. I choose...[he paused and sighed deeply] Fiona, Antoine, and Rotor.
*Sally nodded.*
Sally: I think that's a good choice.

*Sally motioned to a large scale layout of Robotropolis.*
Sally: This is going to be your mission, Tails. [She points to a large building on the outskirts of town] We have evidence that Robotnik is building something there. We cannot figure out what. Your job is find out what, and destroy the building, if necessary. Okay?
Tails: Okay!
Sally: But...
*Tails didn't the sound of that...*
Sally: Sonic and I will leading a team and be acting as back-up. [She notices Tails' face fall.] Standard procedure, Tails. It's not that we don't trust you, it's just that anything can go wrong on these missions. You know that...
*Tails turned his ears backwards, clearly upset.*
Tails: Okay...I...I understand Sally...

*Sally ruffed Tails head affectionatly...*
Sally: Good. Now, shall we go over the plan?
*Sally points to the edge of the map*
Sally: You'll enter Robotropolis on the North side of the city, away from Knothole, where the Swatbot patrols are lightest. Sonic and I will enter from the South, here. [she points to the southern tip of the city.] We'll meet up here,[pointing to center of city], and then proceed to the target. You'll have roughly five minutes to set the charges, and get out before Robotnik will find out. Got it?
Tails: That's too easy, Sally! I want a hard challenge! I want to prove myself!
Sally: Tails, this 'easy challenge' is hard enough, and they don't come any easier, especially against someone like Robotnik.

Sally: [stammering] N...no Tails, it's not that at all. It's just, we want to show you that this isn't a game. Real Freedom Fighters get hurt or killed doing this.
Tails: [shocked] You DO want me to fail! Fine! I'll show you I am more than capable of handling this on my own!
*Tails stormed out of the hut, and towards his own, to prepare for the assault. Sally started to follow him, but Sonic grabbed her arm.*
Sonic: Better not, Sal. Let me take care of this.
Sally: Alright, Sonic. Maybe you can talk some sense into him. I sure couldn't...

*Tails stormed into his hut, and slammed the door. He walked into his lab, and started gathering items he thought he might need. There was a knock at the door, and he heard Sonic's voice.*
Sonic: Tails, ya here?
Tails: [calling back] In the lab, Sonic.
*Sonic walked across Tails' hut to the lab and entered. He found Tails over by the Tornado's hanger. Tails was putting supplies in it.*
Sonic: Tails, can we talk?
Tails: If it's about Princess Sally, Sonic, forget it. I refuse to apologize. She treats me like a child.
Sonic: You ARE a child Tails. You're only twelve years old. You're not ready really for serious battles yet. Robotnik is a dangerous foe. He'd mop the floor with you.

Tails: You'e siding with Sally? Sonic, I thought you were my friend!
Sonic: I AM your friend, but you've got to listen to reason, lil bro. There is always danger when wer sabotage one of Robotnik's plans. It's a miracle that we're still here at all. You can't take any stupid risks against Robotnik. It would be your last.
Tails: I don't CARE, Sonic! I want to prove myself to Sally! I'll do whatever it takes!
Sonic: Chill, Tails. You're goin off the deep end.
*Tails grabs a beaker of some substance, and hurls it against the wall in anger. It shatters into a million pieces.*
Tails: I'm tired of being told I'm too young, too inexperienced! Well, if you and Sally won't let me fight, then how am I supposed to get experience?!
