Format
- Past-tense story perspective. Write "Sonic picked up the stick" and not "Sonic picks up the stick". Medium-length chapters. That's long enough to get the reader hooked, but not so long you'll scare them off.
- Chapters written in the order above. Turrican writes chapter 1, Niles writes 2, Thief 3, and so on, then looping with Turrican writing 8, Niles 9, Thief 10, etcetera.
- Wait at least 24 hours after the poll has been put up before writing the chapter fitting the most-votes scenario. In the event of a tie, you pick the one you like best.
- Generic Sonic story. The whole standard game cast is available, but no fancharacters. No Archie-specific or Sonic X-specific characters.
- The author of each chapter gets dibs on setting up the poll for the next chapter. Be sure to make a wide range of different scenarios for the poll.
- Deadline of one week to write the next chapter, per author.



The Poll
- A poll of seven options will be included at the end of each chapter. The actual voting will happen in a seperate thread put up for each chapter. Since nearly all the authors are mods, that will be very easy to fix.
- Each poll will be open for at least 24 hours before the choice is made.

Chapter 1:
Return to Action


A wide plain of withered grass under a baking sun, lying at the edge of a wide canyon. A shimmer on the far horizon. An explosion of sound, followed by a blue speck growing larger by the second. A blur of red beneath a sleek blue body moving at projectile speed across the vast open landscape.

Clear blue skies above with no more than a few rare clouds spread across the range of vision. A sparkle in the distance, materialising into an X-shaped object.

Miles "Tails" Prower kept his eyes focused on the instrument panels of the Tornado II's cockpit. At this altitude and this speed it'd be impossible to keep track of Sonic with the naked eye. The eight year old fox's best friend and idol had been only too happy to help test the new aircraft's new prototype engine, which ran without the use of a Chaos Emerald. Given how hard it was to keep even one of the Emeralds around for any length time, Tails had opted for a solution that didn't rely on having one.

To be honest, he didn't really need to race Sonic to test the prototype's capacity. The real reason why Tails insisted was because he'd noticed how restless the hedgehog hero had been lately. With no activity from Eggman for months, or any other kind of threat to peace, Sonic was starting to get bothered by the lack of challenge around. He'd even voluntarily spent some time with Amy last week, and if that wasn't a cry for help, what could be?

A sudden warning bleep derailed Tails's train of thought. The radar keeping tabs on Sonic had just started tracking a second supersonic object in motion. Whatever it was, it was moving straight towards the plane.

The radar that the boy genius had designed worked differently than the normal variant. Instead of tracking objects by the magnitude of the reflected signal, the Sonic radar tracked shockwaves generated by motion around and past the speed of sound. While this allowed him to track Sonic as he ran on the ground, it also meant that the two-dimensional viewscreen couldn't tell the difference between an object in the air and one on the ground. That was why Tails didn't spot the missile until it was almost too late.

"Tails!" Sonic shouted in shock, as he saw the explosion.

Immediatelly, the hedgehog skidded to a stop, the intense speed he'd been moving at causing him to slide over two hundred feet forward and release a visible trail of friction burns before finally managing to come to a full stop.

Sonic squinted with his hand over his eyes, trying to spot the Tornado II. To his relief, he saw the plane was still airborne, though flying erratically. The X shape had become a y, as one of the wings was missing, and a plume of smoke was visible. The direction the plane was moving was even more worrying. It was headed straight for the sheer cliffs walls of the canyon.

The blue hedgehog took a few steps back, then narrowed his eyes, and started running with full determination, acellerating faster and faster with each step. Before long he was a blur of speed.

Meanwhile, the unseen machine prepared a second S-MKII class missile for launch, this time accepting the target info on the blue hedgehog from its database.

Chapter 2:
Knuckles' Blunder

The Master Emerald sat on top its rugged, stone alter peacefully. Its protector, Knuckles the Echidna laid on the steps staring thoughtfully at the sky. It has been quite peaceful for a long time the echidna thought. He sat up and let out a drawn out sigh. The echidna stretched out his arms and legs.

Undetected by Knuckles a few shadowy figures lurked all around him. The unknown beings spread out and circled the echidna. They were about ready to spring their trap. One of the figures picked up what resembled a rifle and pointed it at Knuckles. It looked into the scope and was startled at the sight of a purple eye staring back at it.

Not even a second after the robot lowered the rifle Knuckles drove his fist straight through the machine’s head. The others sprang into action attacking the lone protector. One of the robots threw a punch at Knuckles, but the echidna dodged it with ease and grabbed the extended arm. He grinned before he swung the robot into one of its comrades, throwing both of them a few feet back.

Unknowingly to the Master Emerald’s protector, a hovercraft is shown behind the fighting echidna. A claw dropped out of the craft and grasped the enormous emerald. The hovercraft began to ascend with its new treasure in its mechanical hand.

Knuckles grabbed one of the robots by the arms and ripped the limbs off. Using the arms as a weapon the echidna beat the other intruders with ease. He tossed his new toys aside and wiped his hands clean.

A cocky smirk consumed the echidna’s face and he turned around. The cocky smirk quickly turned into a shocked expression as the echidna noticed the Emerald was not seated on its altar. He ran up to where it should have rested and looked around. “Where did it go?” the Echidna said aloud.

His question was then answered by an all too familiar laugh. Knuckles ran to the opposite side of the altar and saw a figure which was also way too familiar for his taste.

Dr. Eggman was a good distance away, but his enormous figure and that of the Eggmobile was not hard to distinguish. The great Doctor turned and waved to his adversary in a mocking manner.

Knuckles watched in anger as his life’s work floated away with the vilest of villains. “I will get the Master Emerald back.” Knuckles shouted towards Eggman. “And you will pay for this intrusion!” Knuckles took a few steps back from the edge of his floating home. The echidna then ran and leaped off the edge of the island.

Chapter 3:
Only a Moment

The soft green blades of grass parted swiftly as the hedgehog sped by, the sheer wind generated from such speed whipping the leaves into the air, leaving a trail of dust speckled with green in the hedgehog’s wake.

Sonic was so intent on his goal he hadn’t even taken time to consider where the initial attack had come from. Even if he had though, chances were he’d have taken the same course of action. Tail was in trouble, and nothing was going to stop him from saving his pal.

Except maybe the missile that detonated in front of him.

Spinning and tumbling into the air, it took only a moment for Sonic to correct his position and land firm footed on the ground, shielding his eyes from the debris coming from the explosion. Where’d that thing come from?

A smoky crater remained where he had once been standing, and a thin white trail curled its way back into the nearby trees. As much as Sonic hated to do it – Tails would have to wait.

It would only take a moment for him to take care of things…

Of course though, a moment was all it would take for something to go wrong.

Cackling to himself as he continued on his way, Eggman was still gloating about his ‘victory’ over Knuckles. True it was a snatch and run job, but effective all the same. Now that he had the Master Emerald, it was only a matter of time before he could complete his master plan.

He was sure that the red dupe wasn’t far behind, and further behind that Angel Island would have fallen into the sea once more. Of course that was of little concern to him, for he was an evil genius, and nothing could come close to his brilliant mind. Up ahead, his latest creation was sitting with an arsenal of missiles to cover the Doctor’s escape.

“Nothing can stop me now!”

Once again he erupted into laughter, before a smoking pile of metal drew his attention. It did not take him long to identify the scrapped remains of the Tornado and if past experiences were anything to go by, then there might be a Chaos Emerald amongst the junk.

Of course, that also meant that Sonic or Tails could be anywhere nearby and returning any second. There was no time to lose!

A smaller mechanical claw stretched from the front of the Eggomatic, sliding and twisting its way through the scraps and debris. Searching, probing for the jewel.

The echidna in the distance was slowly closing in as Eggman continued to delay, and the Doctor began to wonder whether he should continue on unscathed or risk staying a bit longer in an attempt to find the jewel.

Pulling at his moustache in frustration, the indicator on his screen flashed repeatedly, informing the doctor that it had found something. Eager to be on his way, Eggman quickly hammered the recall button, his anxiousness and excitement growing as the claw pulled up his prize.

He didn’t expect it to be something worth even more to Sonic.

“Tails?” Eggman asked himself, the claw bringing the twin-tailed sidekick within reach of the doctor allowing him to prod the fox. He didn’t stir – the crash must have knocked him unconscious.

“What good fortune! I always wanted a hostage…”

Eggman quickly took off once again, anxious to return to his secret base…
