I'm fairly certain that almost every single famous cartoon character today are based off of Mickey Mouse.

QUOTE I'm fairly certain that almost every single famous cartoon character today are based off of Mickey Mouse. Everybody's trying to leech off of Mickey's popularity! Ya know I heard that at one time Sonic was rivaled in popularity only by Mickey Mouse. -------------------- ![]() "That man won't quit as long as he can still draw breath, none of my teammates will. Not necessarily, Torch. I mean, he was at one time the most popular and recognised video game mascot in the entire world. That makes a character historical enough to qualify for a school thingy.

Yeah, but usually teachers want to hear about books and history, not anything to do with video games! (I'd do a report on Sonic, if I ever got the chance...)

Video games are history. Especially in this day and age.

This is true, technology is what we have now. I mean 1950-1980 is when education board members go to school..so they adapt to what they "know" will help kids.It changes with the year.
I think in 10 years, Video Games will be involved more in school. The Army and Navy have now got a studio, creating games to train their soldiers. It all goes on in an endless cycle. |

Yuji Naka is credited as the creator of Sonic, but there are also some 2 other important names that come to mind:
Naoto Oshima: He was the original design artist who drew the "rabbit" prototype of Sonic and eventually tuned it up to the hedgehog we all know today. He might also be credited with all that pre-Sonic Adventure artwork as well. Yuji Uewaka: He's the guy who upgraded Sonic and the rest of his crew into their Sonic Adventure look. He really didn't create anything (except for maybe the sketches of the newer characters like, Cream and Cheese, Shadow, Rouge, Big, etc.) and is still fairly new. One thing i do know is that he's been around in Sega since the late 80's-early 90's and one game that is credited to him is called Ristar (something about a star that could stretch and such). Yuji Naka created the engine and the game concept, but he also needed Oshima's help in bringing a recognizable face to it. -------------------- you live for your desires like a knife...

QUOTE (HyperSonic @ Feb 5 2005, 09:16 PM) Nothing wrong with that, just makes the report more fun to do in my Opinion. Besides I was 16 and in college when I devoted a whole film and video study to comparing Sonic cartoons of new and old, I got to record episodes at college and take screencaps and stuff! You know, the amount of people in my class that came up to me while I was watching classic Sonic cartoons was amazing... "Yeah i remember that" "Man I was so young when I watched them" "Sonic's got a new cartoon? I gotta watch it!" "Yeah I still play the old games, even now. Do you?" I was talking to someone in my class the other day about these new megadrive built in games systems with the classic Sonic games in. Oh, Sonic is such a heritage to our history... But anyway... -------------------- |

It seems to me that there is some confusion as to which creator we are talking about; the creator of the character, or the creator of the first game.
All I know is, Yuji Naka was a programmer (head/lead programmer) on the first game(s). Luck guy, manages to stick around and becomes the head of Sonic Team (I so want his job!). So, in terms of the game itself, Yuji has a hand in Sonic's creation. As for the character, that credit should go to the guy(s) how did the original concept art (I don’t know who they are; might have to go back to the credits at the end of Sonic1). But, technically (going back to the original game as a whole), the Sonic creators would have to be the original executives who hired the (then) young members of Sonic Team to make a game. They would have told them something along the lines of: "Guys, go make a character, make him into a game, and let's kick some Mario arse with it!" |

This topic can be closed at anytime now. I meant to put Yuji Naka, not Yugi. And since this issue can't be officially settled, any admin or mod and CLOSE IT.
